Basile Valentin may be born in the beginning of the XVe century, and about 1413. He would have lived as monk of the order of Saint-Benoît, in Saint Peter convent, in Erfurt in Prussia. One tells that one of the columns of the church of Erfurt being all of a sudden himself open, as by miracle, one had found this alchemist's writings there.

There are good reasons however to believe that there not only was not ever Benedictine monk of this name, but that the pseudonymous author of the works of Basile Valentin belongs in any event at the end of the XVe century or is maybe of one time more recent.

However that may be, the name of Basile Valentin is not on the provincial list of the benedictines of Erfurt, nor on the general list of all religious of this order, set down in the archives of Rome.
